   CLASS 7 SCIENCE

IMPORTANT- KINDLY MARK YOUR ATTENDANCE ON THIS BLOG WITH A GREETING. DO NOT FORGET TO MENTION YOUR NAME AND ROLL NUMBER.

You will need :
A SINGLE LINED NOTEBOOK WHICH IS NEATLY COVERED. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE USED THE INDEX AND WRITTEN TODAY'S DATE.

THE NOTEBOOK WILL BE EVALUATED SO KINDLY MAKE SURE YOU DO ALL YOUR WORK NEATLY.

At the end of this lesson you will be able to
  1. State the precautions to be kept in mind while using a lab thermometer
  2. Explain why Mercury is an ideal liquid for thermometers

Yesterday we had discussed the working of a lab thermometer, hope you have revised that.

LETS CONTINUE:

CERTAIN PRECAUTIONS :

[while using a lab thermometer]
1.The thermometer should be held vertical and surrounded by the liquid whose temperature
is to be read.
2. The bulb should not touch the bottom or sides of the beaker
3. The reading is to be taken without taking it out of the liquid.
4. The eye should be kept at level of mercury thread.
5. Never place it in very hot or very cold liquid, it will break

LET ME NOW ASK YOU A QUESTION :
Have you ever looked at the thermometer used at home to record body temperature when you have fever ?
If you have you will noticed a silvery shiny liquid inside it, this is MERCURY.
NOTE: this same liquid is used in other thermometers (in the lab).

DO YOU KNOW WHY MERCURY IS AN IDEAL CHOICE FOR THERMOMETERS ?
  • It is shiny and can be easily seen.
  • It does not stick to glass.
  • It expands and contracts uniformly.
  • It has a very high melting and boiling point.

Answer the following orally
  1. State any 3 precautions to be taken while reading the temperature on a laboratory thermometer.
  2. Give 3 reasons why mercury is an ideal liquid for thermometers.
  3. Use the link given for a better understanding of today's concepts. → Why mercury is used

HOTS
WHAT DO YOU THINK WILL HAPPEN TO THE READING IF A LABORATORY THERMOMETER IS TAKEN OUT OF THE LIQUID / SUBSTANCE AND THEN OBSERVED ?

That is all for today

SEE YOU SOON
