LEARNING OUTCOMES:

HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED......

 WHAT IS HEAT ???

Let's start with an activity:

Try rubbing your hands together vigorously (with a lot of strength)

What do you feel?
Your hands feel warm!

Now for the next activity DO NOT PERFORM THIS , just think about it.
If a nail is hammered into a piece of wood and you touch the nail, how would it feel?
It would feel warm..
Do you know why  this happens?
It is because of something called Heat.
Heat is produced when Energy is used up. Also keep in mind that when heat is used up, some other form of energy is obtained eg. burn petrol so that the heat energy can run a car

Heat is a form of energy which makes us feel hot or cold.

Have you ever wondered what heat is and why is it important to us?

What would we have used to cook food if we could not burn fuel? How would people have survived in very cold countries without heating in their houses? These are just some thoughts. Heat is very important for all of us on Earth for our survival.

SOURCES OF HEAT

What are the units of heat?
1. Non SI units [ Calorie and kilo calorie ] THESE ARE OLDER UNITS.

2.SI unit Joule[ J] THIS IS THE PRESENTLY USED UNIT.

Here are some important relationships;

1 kilojoule = 1000 joules
1 kilocalorie = 1000 calories
1 kcal = 1000 cal
1 cal = 4.184 J
1 kcal = 1000 cal *4.184 J = 4184 J

Answer the following orally -
  1. Define Heat
  2. Name some sources of heat
  3. State two ways in which heat is important in our daily lives
  4. Name the S.I units and non S.I unit of heat
  5. How many joules are there in 1 calorie ?
  6. How many calories are there in 1 kilocalorie ?

That is all for today.....

See you soon
